Detailed Mass Map of CL0024+1654 from Strong Lensing
نویسندگان
چکیده
We construct a high resolution mass map of the z = 0.39 cluster 0024+1654, based on parametric inversion of the associated gravitational lens. The lens creates eight well-resolved sub-images of a background galaxy, seen in deep imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope. Excluding mass concentrations centered on visible galaxies, more than 98% of the remaining mass is represented by a smooth concentration of dark matter centered near the brightest cluster galaxies, with a 33 h kpc soft core. The asymmetry in the mass distribution is <3% inside 107 h kpc radius. The dark matter distribution we observe in CL0024 is far more smooth, symmetric, and nonsingular than in typical simulated clusters in either Ω = 1 or Ω = 0.3 CDM cosmologies. Integrated to 107 h kpc radius, the rest-frame mass to light ratio is M/LV = 238± 40 h (M/LV )⊙. Subject headings: gravitational lensing — cosmology: observations — methods: observational — galaxies: cluster, individual (CL0024+1654) — galaxies: formation — dark matter Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by AURA, under NASA contract NAS 5-26555

Molar mass estimate of dark matter from the dark mass distribution measurements
We study the distribution of dark matter versus visible matter using a set of data obtained from strong gravitational lensing in the galaxy cluster CL0024+1654 and another set of data inferred from the universal rotation curves in spiral galaxies. The important feature of these two dramatically different observations is that the mass density profile of both visible and dark components can be es...
متن کاملThe Mass Structure of the Galaxy Cluster Cl0024+1654 from a Full Lensing Analysis of Joint Subaru and Acs/nic3 Observations
We derive an accurate mass distribution of the rich galaxy cluster Cl0024+1654 (z = 0.395) based on deep Subaru BRcz imaging and our recent comprehensive strong lensing analysis of HST/ACS/NIC3 observations. We define an undiluted background population of red and blue galaxies by carefully combining all color and positional information. Unlike previous work, the weak and strong lensing are in e...
متن کاملWeak Lensing of Galaxy Clusters in MOND
We study weak gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters in terms of the MOND (MOdified Newtonian Dynamics) theory. We calculate shears and convergences of background galaxies for three clusters (A1689, CL0024+1654, CL1358+6245) and the mean profile of 42 SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) clusters and compare them with observational data. The mass profile is modeled as a sum of X-ray gas, galaxies ...
متن کاملChandra Analysis and Mass Estimation of the Lensing Cluster of Galaxies Cl0024+17
We present a detailed analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of the lensing cluster of galaxies CL0024+17 at z = 0.395. We found that the radial temperature profile is consistent with being isothermal out to ∼ 600 kpc and that the average X-ray temperature is 4.47 −0.54 keV. The X-ray surface brightness profile is represented by the sum of extended emission centered at the central bright ellipt...
